Configuring a VoIP SIP trunk services provider

Set up your voice over IP services provider. So what you should be going to do is registering with a voice over IP services provider. so using a voice pulse for what’s called SIP trunking SIP trunking is going to be what my PBX is going to be using so that it can connect to the outside world so my PBX is going to be the box that all the phones at my local business connections.

You need a services provider a SIP trunk services provider that’s going to attach my PBX to the public switch telephone network the PSTN in order from my phone system to be attached to the outside world, I need to register with a SIP Trunking services provider you can attach your PBX to analog phone lines there are many ways to do all different types of voice over IP networking and all sorts of stuff with your PBX I’m going to be sticking today with this registering with the voice pulse I use voice pulse for a couple of reasons. the first is that their voice over IP services are very reliable in the past four years that I’ve had my store here I’ve never had any issues with voice pulse going down and we do get a lot of phone calls all the time.

Second is that they’re very affordable you look around and I’m sure you’ll eventually find cheaper but for what level of reliability you get they’re very affordable and the third is that the support is on top of everything if I have an issue if I have a question they get back to me very quickly for those three reasons voice pulse has earned me as a loyal customer again they’re they’re not they’re not paying me to say any of this. it’s just it’s what it is you know I googled voice over IP services provider I I saw a bunch of them I flipped a coin and it just so happened that when I flipped that coin of choosing this is my voice over IP services provider that they have better not suck which is why I’m recommending them to you so we’re gonna be going over .

Actually going to register a new set up and again you’re gonna see this from start to finish now in some ways this isn’t that this is not exactly the most fun part this is boring and configuring things but I did promise that I was going to show you from start to finish how to do this and I do take pride and not leaving anything out so first, we’re going to go to voice pulses website which is voice pulse command we’re gonna wait for Time Warner to load it. so we’re going to go here SIP trunking for voice-over-IP gateways and PBX details now we’re going to register for their service called voice pulse five that is what we’re registering for here .

The first thing that I have to do is sign up ok please enter your email in pass so I’m going to enter an email address we’re going to log in here now at this point if Time Warner ever lets me do this it’s going to ask that I verify so I’m gonna have to go to my personal email now and verify you’re probably gonna see a lot of fast forwarding and skipping around this point because Time Warner again they take their nice sweet time when it comes to Internet service here there’s no competition but Verizon DSL in this area and Verizon DSL is very very very incredibly miserably ridiculously slow. so the competitors like Time Warner know that they can get away with just you know bending you over and doing what and having their way with you which is why the internet here that’s like 175 bucks a month.

Create new hostname

It’s just awful so I log into my email accounts and I’m clicking to confirm my account link okay here we go I’m verified and once I verify I should be good to log into voice pulse five so first thing I’m going to do is I’m gonna add a new organization all right so I am and it’s fairly simple they walk you through the entire thing here the first thing that I’m going to do here after adding a new organization is I’m going to click on gateways and I’m going to add a new gateway so I click on new gateway and I’m gonna create my hostname and I’m gonna save it I’m also going to set the name as it of the Gateway .- just to keep things nice and simple now at this point I have a gateway which is what I can connect to but now what I need is an endpoint,

VoIP SIP trunk services

The gateway is going to be like the URL that’s where you’re going to be going to actually get the service but the endpoint is going to be like the login the login is what’s going to be used so that voice pulse knows is this PBX supposed to be connecting to your system this is what’s preventing the guy next door from you know just being knowing my URL and therefore leeching phone services so there are two different ways that I can do this the first thing I’m going to do is I’m going to select my what I created here v1 Avenue I’m gonna select this gateway now what I have to do here is I have to provide a name I’m gonna provide the same 1 v1 Avenue and the data center AIESEC choose is gonna be closest to me . so I’m here on the East Coast so I will choose Virginia now let’s talk about IP authentification for a second if you have IP auth turned on it means that as long as this is the IP address that you give that’s connecting to voice pulls as long as my PBX is connecting from a specific IP

Using IP authentication

That means that it will always let the phone calls through credential based authentification means I don’t care what IP are connecting from as long as you have the username and the password right I will let you connect now you credential based authentification is a little bit more complicated because you obviously have to have a username and a password and IP based authentication is a little bit simpler but it and some might argue more secure because it means that you must be in within that organization to actually have a voice service so again if somebody tries to use my voice pulse account from their home even if they figured out my username and password through some nefarious means they won’t be able to make phone calls because they’re doing it from their home or their office and not my office the reason I’m using I’m not using IP authentication here is because I don’t want to make assumptions am setting up this system somewhere.

Where they’re using a static IP or am I setting it up somewhere where they don’t have a static IP and here’s we’re just having a little bit of knowledge of technology and people and how the world works is gonna help you here and see I know that someday somewhere some small business owner is going to look at their bill and go why are we paying 30 or 40 dollars a month Time Warner for a static IP what is a static IP and they’re going to call up Time Warner and they’re gonna say what is this static IP thing and they’re gonna say well that means your IP is static versus dynamic and the small business owner is a small business owner and not an IT professional is gonna go will my internet still work if I have no static IP and they’ll go well yes but your IP address may change and I’ll go will my internet still work and the time when a representative will go oh yes your internet will still work even if you have a dynamic IP.

Then it’ll go okay so so let’s change over to that and they’ll change their business internet service over to the dynamic IP to save 30 or 40 or 50 dollars a month and then their phone system will stop working and will it be the fault of the business owner no it’s gonna be the fault of that mofo that set up my phone system so yeah I use credential based authentification I try to set up complex username and passwords and I strongly encourage not leaving this stuff written down anywhere obvious early you know again in plain text and emails or anything like that and if you do that in my opinion from a security standpoint you’re fine again I’m just thinking ahead to what is likely to happen will they change Internet Service Providers without telling me if you change your internet service provider from Verizon to Time Warner or from Time Warner to files or for any one of these different companies the first thing that pops into most people’s minds is not hey let me call the guy that set up their PBX system five years ago.

Small VoIP businesses

That we can ask them if there’s gonna be any problem switching over from DSL to files them that that doesn’t happen so that’s why I don’t use IP based authentication again if you are doing this for your own business or for your own company what do you know what’s going on, by all means, I focus primarily on small businesses and with small businesses there’s almost no certainty you just want to set up something that is both secure but also not likely to go down and go on fire because somebody decides they want to try to save 30 bucks so we’re going to go back over here and we’re going to choose a username which I will get I will make v1 Avenue and then I will make a password over here now the thing is I’m going to erase this so that you can’t see the password that I’m typing because if you see the password that I’m typing you are going to troll me forever and you’re gonna probably try to log into this and do terrible nasty things

VoIP SIP trunk services

I’m purposely leaving that password completely blanked off of the screen for this and then once I’ve typed that password I’m going to the save key and again this is important so yeah see what it says over here when I go to endpoints and I click Edit on my endpoints it says when you type that password in there it said once you type it in there it will never show it to you again and that’s for security purposes they don’t want people to just be able to log in here and if somebody keeps it logged in that that gets taken now that is good security on their part the next thing that we’re going to do here is create a trunk is what’s going to allow my Gateway to connect to the public switched telephone network which is again the outside world and yeah so we’re going to click trunks over here and I’m gonna go new trunk you know the name is going to be required so again I’m just gonna keep it simple and use that same name for this trunk allow outbound calls.

I’m gonna set the true because if I don’t allow outbound calls this client will be particularly mad at me allow inbound calls true because again if I don’t allow inbound calls they’re probably going to be particularly mad at me so as new organizations are limited to five channels initially if you need additional capacity for testing contact us and let us know that is very fair so I did this and perform caller ID name lookups on inbound calls I’m setting that to false because free PBX has some functionality for name lookups inside and also you may want to do a custom caller ID setup so I actually have a caller ID setup here where it actually checks the database in repair shopper so I use the system called repair shop or for tracking clients and not only will it show the name of the customer from repair shopper but it will actually grab the status of the ticket so if is it still being worked on was it approved well is it already fixed is it something that’s still in progress is it waiting

On a part is this person somebody who just cursed out the receptionist we have statuses for all these different things so when somebody calls I can actually see from the caller ID not only who you are and what your ticket is but I can also see you know what what’s going on with your cut with your situation from the caller idea on the screen before I pick up the phone so it gives me that one or two or three seconds to kind of prepare myself for the call that I’m in for you can do all these kind hypes of cool stuff for free PBX so I’m not going to get into caller ID or name lookups right over here so select the gateway for this trunk I’m going to select the gateway that I have that I’ve created before and then I’m going to save that now what’s next is to add a phone number.

So if you want to get a new phone number you simply click phone numbers you hit add phone number and you’ll be able to actually buy a phone number and they have many phone numbers here for many many different territories now in the situation I’m in I don’t need to buy a phone number I need to port my phone number over so what I do with my clients is I ask them for the phone numbers that they want to be ported over after they asked me for the number they want to be ported over I go over to this page over here . which you know voice Pauls calm slash product slash residential slash how does it work and from this page it says can I keep my number so I’m going to type the number in right over here and then hit go.

For example let’s see if my number would be available so let’s see my business number is here can I get my number yes I can keep my number so you simply type in the phone number there and then what you would do is you would open a ticket with voice polls and you would ask what it is you need to do to get your number poured it over and again they’re very very helpful the reason that I like voice pulse is when it comes to any of these things they’re quick to reply they’re helpful so go over here before you sell your client that you can use that number before you assume that the number that your that your looking at the port whether it’s your cell phone number your business number make sure that you enter it into there first.

There are many many wacky reasons that you may not be able to keep the number that you have now and you want to make sure that you can before you move forward so that’s what you’re going to have to do after you’ve set up all that stuff you’re going to need to port your phone number over all right so now what I’m gonna go over invoice poles is adding a phone number so what I did over here with a to add a phone number was very basic it’s so basic I’m not even gonna bother going over it I know I said I would go over every single step here but you literally once you log into the voice poles five interface you could add a phone number you click buy and you buy a number so here I bought a number I assigned it to my gateway which was literally just clicking the gateway that was there.

Old SIP trunking

After all of that was done you just hit a 911 to type in your address and that’s it and you have a phone number now what I want to go over here is setting up something called call flow if you don’t set this up anything will work this is very very important if you don’t set up the call flow nothing that you do will work everything you everything will be a nightmare and you’ll have no idea why nothing is working the reason I’m bringing up this very very important point is because the old system that these people had had none of this so the old SIP trunking that voice pulse had in the oldest SIP that a lot of these carriers had did not require that you set up any of this stuff by default it would just send the calls to the default gateway and it would just work now that is not the default behavior

VoIP SIP trunk services

The default behavior is that you have to type in confusing little symbols to make it work so if you don’t follow this you will be in for eight or ten hours of troubleshooting hell so please follow everything I say so the first thing I’m gonna do here is I’m gonna delete every single call app and every single setting I had here and I’m gonna show I’m gonna show you what happens when I try to make a phone call with that stuff disabled so that it sticks because you’re gonna make this mistake I know you will see that it’s a busy signal you don’t want to get a busy signal for seven hours straight while you’re trying to set up a phone system right good so pay attention so the first thing you’re going to do over here is to clic on call flow.

When you click on call flow you’re going to see your endpoints gateways all that stuff over here so I’m going to click on call flow and then I’m going to choose one of these I’m gonna choose the one that I created now I’m gonna say CAC all app so I’m gonna hit call app I’m gonna hit add step now from that I’m going to click forward and then I’m going to click my endpoint that I created then I’m going to hit save but I’m not done yet don’t stop paying attention there’s more after I’m done with that and I hit save you go to app map where they have all of these expressions you have wild cards and enumerators and literals and look at this I mean this this is like this is a fucking pokemon winking at me I mean this is not intuitive but it is what it is so what you’re going to do is you’re going to take this and you’re going to copy that exactly as is without the trailing space you’re gonna click Add step match expression it’s gonna be that and you’re gonna forward that to this call app that you just made so that makes phone calls.

Now that’s forwarded to make phone calls work again very important if you don’t do this you will get a busy signal even if you set up a call app you need to have a little pokemon winking at you or you’re going to get this issue so what you need to do after you do all of that see ringing good and you don’t forget this part this is important no don’t don’t forget this part now again there are many different ways that you could set this up you can set this up so that different numbers go to different end Pole you can do all sorts of crazy stuff now what we’re going to do next is we’re going to set up this system within our free PBX box so we’re going to go into the free PBX box and we’re going to set up all this stuff the gateways the endpoints and the SIP trunking within free PBX so that we can actually get started connecting our phones to the public switch telephone network.
